When every I think of New York, I think of lines and angles. This picture was taken from the bridge crossing from the Vivian Beaumont over to Juilliard. It's a perfect example of how abstract I see the city. After reading the book, Broadway: A History of New York in Thirteen Miles by Fran Leadon, every brick, every railing, every angle held new meaning for me.
And will continue to inform my journey. Cities develop around either an ideology or an economy. Seeing New York as the colony, for better or worse, that was founded on commerce, makes me love it even more. It is the American dream personified.
It embodies immigration, diversity, freedom, imagination
It epitomizes self-determination, inhumanity, beneficence, elation
It represents capitalism, classism, opportunity, artistry and possibility
It symbolizes division, bigotry, tolerance, tenderness
Yes, I do over romanticize New York, I admit that. But what you find is a microcosm, a laboratory for life. I will use those life lessons this year to write, teach, create, and live.
