Response to Natalie Colony

Curiosity Killed the Cat

Part One

Expectations of the speaker

Early in the presentation, it was clear that your strong sense teaching purpose is framed by a healthy curiosity that informs your teaching practice. As an empath, you probably use those powers to divine how to make the connections. Understand that gift can serve as a keystone for a great teaching practice.

What I learned from your talk (any new information)

Natalie, you reminded for me why it is so difficult for us as arts educators to be heard or understood by those outside the profession. As artist/educators who teach in a subjective manner, we often find ourselves at odds with the general curriculum. In your persuasive talk, I was convinced that it is critical to develop a concrete definition of our teaching philosophy.

How it was meaningful to me

As an empath myself, it reinforced how important it is for us to use that capability to forge stronger bonds with my students.

Part Two

The single most compelling aspect of the visual information shared

Every single slide gave me a meaningful peek into your world and the students that you observed during your fieldwork practice. Even though at this moment you don’t have your own classroom, it was clear how your ownership of your practice is developing. It was also visually engaging because the design of your slides was clear and uncluttered. It made a greater impact that there were not too many slides and those that were used clearly represented the part of the talk they were illustrating.

I wondered if this presentation could be used a presentation to be forwarded to prospective employers, and you begin search for employment. What is the intended audience for you and your work.

Part Three

Changes in my own presentation after viewing Natalie's

work

I really want to clean up my visuals. A realization set in, that I am not being concrete enough in my visuals or in the message. When there is evidence of clutter in the slides, that probably indicates a talk that is too busy, unfocused and vague.

Beyond the clarity of message, there needs to be a way in which your identified audience is cohesively addressed, which can be effectively done in the opening statement without any equivocation. Clear wording, imagery and rationale are what I saw from Natalie’s presentation and what I intend to emulate.
